Description
Gichichi delivers again with classic Kenya cultivars grown at high elevation and fully washed on raised beds.
Resulting in remarkable flavors of peach, tart plum tea, grape, clove, ginger candies, and fragrant hops.
This Kenya AA comes from the Gichichi Factory washing station in Nyeri County, located just under 1,800 meters in the Othaya constituency. The name Gichichi comes from the nearby town where the site is located, near Chinga and along the border shared by Nyeri and Muranga Counties. Gichichi serves 477 smallholder farmers and is one of several washing stations managed by the Othaya Farmers Cooperative Society, which has operated in the region since the late 1950s. Othaya manages 19 wet mills and processes coffee by strict day-of-delivery separation in order to isolate and protect quality at every stage.
This lot is composed primarily of SL-28 and SL-34, with small amounts of Ruiru-11 and Batian mixed in. After harvest, whole cherry is delivered to the washing station and depulped using disc depulping machines. The coffee is then fermented to remove the remaining demucilage before being fully washed in clean water. Drying takes place on raised beds under the sun to ensure even airflow and slow, consistent moisture reduction. After drying, the coffee is sorted by screen size, and this lot represents the AA grade, the largest and most sought-after bean size.
In the cup, this coffee presents a vibrant profile with bright fruits and well-developed sweetness. Aromatics show pink grapefruit and peach with hints of honey and soft spice. The flavor opens with citrus and stone fruit, moving through lemon candy, peach nectar, and tart plum tea. As the cup cools, spice notes of clove and ginger candies emerge alongside a tannic tea structure that keeps the cup clean and refreshing. The finish reveals subtle fragrant hops and a light herbal bitterness that adds complexity and depth to the aftertaste.
