Guatemala Acatenango Cooperative La Asunción Maribel is situated in the San José Poaquil region of Acatenango, Chimaltenango, Guatemala. The cooperative, known as La Asunción, encompasses multiple farmers around San José Poaquil. The specific lot in focus is named Maribel and comprises varieties such as Typica, Bourbon, Caturra, and Catuai. The coffee undergoes a washed processing method and thrives at altitudes ranging from 1900 to 2000 meters above sea level.

The La Asuncion Cooperative employs traditional methods for processing their fully washed coffees. The seeds are depulped and fermented in washing tanks with fresh water for around 24 hours, followed by a complete wash and drying period of 12 to 15 days on patios. Each day-lot is meticulously cupped and separated by cupping profile to maintain consistency in the cup.

The cooperative, headquartered in San José Poaquil near Acatenango, Chimaltenango, operates with member farms ranging from 1800 to 2000 meters above sea level, benefiting from an average annual rainfall of 1,800 mm. Most farms cultivate coffee under the shade of various trees such as "Chalum," Grevillea, Avocado, Pine, or "Jocote."

The history of La Asuncion Cooperative traces back to the 19th century when Don José Morales and his family migrated from Joyabaj Quiche to Canajal, San Martin Jilotepeque. Initially focused on egg production, the Morales family gradually invested in agriculture, eventually introducing the first bourbon coffee plantations in the 1980s, sourced from the Acatenango region. Over time, coffee became a vital income source for the Morales family and the surrounding communities in San José Poaquil.

Don Tomas Morales Chitic, the grandson of Don José Morales, is now carrying forward the family tradition, actively promoting the growth and renovation of coffee plantations. To enhance commercialization and improve the lives of San José Poaquil families, the Morales family recently united their efforts, giving rise to the "Cooperativa La Asunción," named in honor of Don José's wife.
